Religious Sympathy Messages

Religious sympathy messages for funeral flowers and cards, with guidance on faith-appropriate wording.

When the family of the person who has died holds a strong faith, a religious sympathy message can bring real comfort, echoing the words they will hear at the service itself. The key is to match the wording to their beliefs rather than your own. This guide offers Christian and Catholic messages, gentle wording for any faith, and a respectful note on traditions where flowers are not usually sent.

Christian sympathy messages

Christian condolences in the UK often draw on familiar scripture. Psalm 23 ("The Lord is my shepherd"), John 14:2 ("In my Father's house are many rooms") and Matthew 5:4 ("Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted") are among the most quoted.

  • "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want." With deepest sympathy.
  • May God hold you in the palm of His hand at this sad time.
  • Safe in the arms of Jesus.
  • "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted." (Matthew 5:4)
  • With prayers and heartfelt sympathy for you and your family.
  • May the peace of God, which passes all understanding, be with you.
  • At rest with the Lord, and forever in our hearts.
  • Praying that God's love surrounds you in the days ahead.
  • "I am the resurrection and the life." With sympathy and hope.
  • May the Lord comfort you among all who mourn.

Messages for a Catholic family

Catholic mourning often includes prayers for the soul of the person who has died, and it is customary for friends to offer a Mass card, arranging for a Mass to be said in their memory, alongside or instead of flowers. Messages can reflect this tradition.

  • Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.
  • You and your family are in our prayers; a Mass will be said in her memory.
  • May his soul rest in the peace of Christ.
  • With deepest sympathy; we are keeping you in our prayers and at Mass.
  • May Our Lady comfort you as she comforted those who mourned her Son.
  • Praying for the repose of her soul and for all who loved her.
  • With sympathy, prayers and the promise of a Mass offered in his name.
  • May the angels lead her into paradise.

General faith-respectful wording

If you know the family is religious but are unsure of the detail of their beliefs, choose words that honour faith without assuming doctrine.

  • May your faith bring you strength and comfort at this time.
  • Keeping you in our thoughts and prayers.
  • May you be surrounded by love, peace and the comfort of your faith.
  • With sympathy, and with prayers for peace in your home.
  • May her soul rest in eternal peace.
  • Wishing you comfort, hope and the support of all who love you.
  • May God grant you peace and strength in the days ahead.

When religious wording is and isn't appropriate

Religious messages suit families who practise that faith, funerals held in a place of worship, or someone known for their belief. They are best avoided when the family has chosen a humanist ceremony or when you are unsure of their beliefs; in those cases a simple "thinking of you with deepest sympathy" is always safe and always kind.

Jewish and Muslim traditions: a respectful note

Jewish and Muslim mourning customs usually do not involve sending flowers, so check before ordering; a condolence card, a charitable donation or a visit is generally more appropriate. Words still matter greatly in both traditions.

  • May her memory be a blessing. (A widely used Jewish condolence.)
  • Wishing you comfort among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.
  • We are thinking of you as you sit shiva and beyond.
  • May Allah grant him mercy and grant you patience and peace.
  • "To Allah we belong, and to Him we return." With heartfelt sympathy.
  • May Allah grant her the highest place in Paradise.

If unsure, ask the funeral director or a family friend what would be welcome. Respecting the family's tradition is itself a message of sympathy.
