Floral Letters and Names
Floral letters are individual letters made from flowers, set side by side to spell a word or name. In the UK the most common choices are MUM, DAD, NAN, GRANDAD, SON, or the first name of the person who has died. The letters are usually displayed along the side of the hearse, where they can be seen as the cortege travels to the service.
Because they state a relationship so plainly, floral letters are almost always sent by immediate family, children spelling MUM or DAD, grandchildren spelling NAN, or siblings spelling a brother's or sister's name.
Each letter is built on its own frame, typically 12 to 18 inches tall, with a base of massed white chrysanthemums and an edging of ribbon or foliage. A spray of roses, carnations, or the deceased's favourite flowers is often added across the letters for colour.
Florists price these tributes per letter, and deliver the finished letters to the funeral director, who arranges them in the hearse on the day.
When to Choose Floral Letters and Names
- Floral letters are usually reserved for immediate family, as they name the relationship or the person directly.
- They suit funerals where the cortege will travel a visible route, since the letters are designed to be read through the windows of the hearse.
- They are appropriate for both burials and cremations, and for religious and non-religious services alike.
- Families often agree among themselves who will send the lettered tribute, so it is worth checking before ordering to avoid duplication.

Frequently asked questions
How much do floral letters cost in the UK?
Most UK florists charge between £35 and £60 per letter. A word such as MUM therefore typically costs £105 to £180, while a longer name will cost proportionally more.
What words can be spelled in flowers?
Any word or name is possible. MUM, DAD, NAN, and GRANDAD are the most requested, followed by first names and words such as SON, BRO, or SIS.
How much notice does a florist need for floral letters?
Letters take longer to make than standard tributes, so most florists ask for at least 48 hours' notice. For longer names or busy periods, ordering three to four days ahead is safer.
Where are floral letters displayed during the funeral?
They are most often laid along the inside of the hearse beside the coffin, facing outwards so they can be read. At the service they may then be placed at the front of the chapel or at the graveside.
Should more than one family member send lettered tributes?
Usually one set is sent on behalf of the closest family group, such as all the children together. Sharing the cost is common.
